Don’t Try To Push The River Up The Stream, Ride the Wave!

raftingI found some fun video to give further example of what I talked about last week.

Remember the principle; to ride the wave, you have to be working together to move faster than the speed of the flow. Having a powerful team and talented guide can make all the difference in having an exciting ride as opposed to being tossed and thrown.

White Water Rafting in Colorado

Especially during tougher economic times, it’s important to find and use your own unique edge. A good coach, can prove the difference between hanging on as the river of life’s current situation dashes you through rocks and rapids or being provided a paddle to help you travel with the rivers flow, taking advantage of it’s speed and movement to direct you along the path you want.

Move Faster Than the River

I had the wonderful opportunity to reacquaint myself with river rafting here in the Rogue Valley. Wow, can that be an exhilarating experience!

I found myself pulling from that experience as I spoke with a client recently. You see, skillful river rafting, meaning you travel the river enjoying the exhilaration of the roller coaster-like ride, is highly dependent on one thing: that you have the ability to approach the rapids moving faster than the waves.

Which means, as you approach a set of rapids, your guide begins to shout for you to paddle with everything you have!

From what I understand, when you can paddle so that you and your boat are moving faster than the waves, then you are able to direct the boat.

Holding back and clinging to the sides results in simply being tossed about, crashing into rocks and sides and possibly even a good dunking.

Are Your Riding the Wave Or Getting Tossed?

So do you feel a bit like you’re being tossed about, waiting and hoping for a change in the river of some situation in your life?

Then think on this; how could you get moving in a more purposeful way, a more powerful, faster way so that you could use the momentum of the movement of that situation and begin to direct yourself through it?

Riding the Rapids

I have a few ideas…

No river rafter rides all the time. Rafters get out in quiet spots to rest and regroup. During those times, they find value in breaking down what worked and what could be improved upon. That’s what helps them grow their skill in working with the river’s powerful motion.

This works for life too. Just as an experienced guide can be a help to those on the boat, by keeping an eye on all the parts; water, crew, landscape, what’s ahead: so a good coach can help you initiate and utilize your deeper awareness, understanding, and discernment in your current situation.

Skills to Ride

Being aware of your strengths and abilities is key. What do you do well? What is your strong suit? What, in particular can you use to move more powerfully through your current situation?

Taking time to take inventory can be most helpful. What worked in the past that you could apply or readjust to meet what’s being called for in the current situation?

What old patterns do you have a tendency to fall into, over and over, than definitely don’t work, and what could you do to change these behaviors?

And what new techniques have you considered, or you might consider? Maybe you’re even a bit nervous about using them. Then how could you practice in a contained way before you take them “out on the river” to see if they’d be a fit for you?

All these you can do on your own. And I highly recommend that you do take the time, just as the best guides and crew do, to prepare and debrief after a “trip through the rapids”.

You Can Join a Crew!

But you don’t have to go it alone if you’d like to accomplish your goals and grow your skill set more quickly and easily.

Join my crew!

I’m preparing to “set sail” several “crew-size” Mastermind groups for Fall running through Life’s rapids. I sure hope you’ll come join us.

Starting in the next two weeks, I’ll be arranging groups of 6 to meet once a week for one hour. We’ll be doing just what I’ve been talking about here, our work before we set back into the rough waters and assessing what worked and what could work next when we anchor.

I’ll be your guide. I’ll be watching the waters ahead and behind, and assisting each person. Working together you can get much further, faster than all on your own.

So if you are interested, call me at 541-488-1678 to see if your situation could benefit from the power of a whole crew working together to get you where you want to go!

Meetings will be Monday and Tuesday mornings, early to start the week off right! Money an issue? I think you’ll find I can accommodate your budget, as well.
